The Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE)

The Beacon School run a very successful DofE programme supporting our students through Bronze, Silver and very shortly the Gold Award.

To take part in the DofE is an ideal opportunity for a student to participate in a life changing experience.  They will discover new interests, talents and develop essential skills for the future in their life and work. They will have fun and make new friends, improve their self-esteem and confidence.  Plus, the award will enhance a CV or University application as DofE is recognised as a mark of achievement.

Students from any background, regardless of ability, gender or location can participate.  It is not about being first or a competition it is about setting both personal challenges and boundaries.

Students aged from 14 to 24 years of age can progress through the three levels - Bronze, Silver and finally Gold as follows:

  • Bronze – for those aged 14+
  • Silver – for those aged 15+
  • Gold – for those aged 16+

There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold.  Each level involves working with the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing lots of new skills, planning, training and completing an expedition.

As mentioned above students need to be 14 years of age to participate but if they are still 13 at date of application then they are welcome to speak to the DofE Leader, Mr Preen as they could still take part.

The Beacon School is accredited as a licensed organisation and the staff will support all students through their programme helping them to choose their activities and set their objectives to achieve their award.

Dedicated sessions take place as per table below, after school on a Wednesday with Mr Preen the DofE Leader.  Mr Preen is also available to see students at break and lunchtime to deal with any questions a student may have, it is the students responsibility to sort any queries..
