The Beacon School (Year 8) - vs - Oxted School
Fixtures & Results
On Tuesday 26th February the Year 8 football team played an away match against Oxted. The squad had played a competitive fixture the night before in the quarter final of the Surrey Cup so there were some tired legs and also some players that could not play this game. This allowed some other members of the squad to play the game which was excellent. The game started well as both teams battled for early possession. It was clear that those who played the previous night felt a little ‘leggy’ as The Beacon struggled to win first and second challenges. Oxted took the lead as a through ball was played leaving their striker one on one with Rafferty; 1-0 Oxted. Shortly after, Oxted extended their lead to make it 2-0. The Beacon were playing some excellent football as they kept the ball extremely well, creating width in attack and playing some nice one and two touch football. The boys were rewarded for this excellent spell as Ollie scored an absolute thunderbolt of a strike to make it 2-1. Again, The Beacon continued to dominate possession and had 5 excellent corners delivered in by Alfie (who usually plays in goal) but no one could get on the end of them! Against the run of play, Oxted scored from a corner to make it 3-1 at half time.
The half time team talk was all about character. The team had not been in a losing position at half time all season and needed to find the motivation and determination to turn this game around. There was a change in shape and Brandon was given his debut in the second half. Shortly after the restart, The Beacon scored as Ollie chipped in a free kick for Alfie to strike into the bottom corner; 3-2. The Beacon continued to play exciting football and as the ball was passed into the centre of midfield to Ollie around 25 yards out, he struck it first time into the far corner. This was even better than his first, a fantastic strike; 3-3! The belief was installed into the team and they pushed for a winner. Freddie then produced some individual brilliance to finish left footed into the bottom corner to make it 4-3 to The Beacon. The comeback was complete!
A huge well done to the squad who have had a great week on the pitch. Man of the Match was Ollie for his 2 goals and assist in the game. Thank you to Oxted for hosting the game.
