Last week we celebrated Pride month in school through our assemblies. Pride month is an opportunity for all of us to recognise the struggle of the LGBTQ+ community. It recognises that in the past members of the LGBTQ+ community were made to feel ashamed of who they are and last week we considered what that must have been like. As recently as 2000 being gay was illegal in the armed forces and we considered the experience of Dame Kelly Holmes who felt she had to hide her sexuality for 30 years.

At The Beacon we are working hard with our young people to encourage them to be allies - to support one another and to challenge prejudice in all its forms. We ask our young people to challenge one another when they hear discrimination which still exists sadly in today's world and ask them to be respectful when addressing each other. We have this year created a group of Beacon Allies who have been working with Mr Bell to promote inclusion. Their first project has been to consider our school uniform and to work with the senior leadership team to make our uniform gender neutral. From now on students are able to choose which elements of the uniform they would like to wear and we will be removing references to gender from the policy for September.

This week saw the end of our examinations for Year 11 and 13 students. Our final assembly for Year 11 on Friday was a poignant affair; Ms Hider led an amusing, fun filled and emotional goodbye to a fantastic year group who have conducted themselves impeccably during exam season. We are proud of them all and enjoyed a superb evening celebrating with them at Sandown racecourse on Wednesday night at the Year 11 prom which was extra special having not been able to hold the event for 2 years. We look forward to celebrating with our Year 13 students on 13th July who have worked so hard for their examinations.
