In April several students in Years 7 and 8 at The Beacon participated in the Junior United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Maths Challenge. This demanding challenge encourages mathematical reasoning, the precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve abstract problems. It has been running for over 25 years and allows pupils to compete against their peers whilst earning them either a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate. In recent years around 200,000 pupils have taken part from over 3000 schools. Of all entrants; 21% are awarded a Bronze, 13% a Silver & 6% a Gold certificate.

I am delighted to see our students take on these challenges as it proves to be advantageous across the curriculum and the wider world allowing students to improve their soft skills including logical thought processing, deduction, lateral thinking, pattern searching and estimations.
