MESSAGE FROM MR EMONI - HOMEWORK AT THE BEACON

Over the last two years, improving homework standards has been one of our priorities. So, two years should be plenty of time to address homework. You could reasonably expect to see a school where all teachers set high-quality homework and mark submissions on Classcharts; students are intrinsically motivated to complete it and do so without prompting, detentions are a thing of the past because every piece is handed in on time and to a high standard and the learning train continues on its journey to brilliant outcomes for all.

Possibly not.

While the homework utopia outlined above may be out of reach for the time being, I believe we are considerably closer to it than ever before.

At the Parent Council meeting in December, parents confirmed that we have come a long way when it comes to homework at The Beacon. However, they asked for special recognition for students completing homework tasks. We have taken this on board and now award termly Headteacher signed certificates for 100% homework completion.

In the Spring term, 254 students were awarded this certificate for work completed in the Autumn term, and two weeks back, 302 students received awards for work completed in the Spring term. We are confident that this number will continue to rise.

According to research, homework has a significant positive impact on the academic progress of secondary school students. At The Beacon, we will keep working to ensure our students benefit from high-quality homework.

Mr H. Emoni
