Through the 'AimHigher Programme', The Beacon School has developed strong links with a number of Universities. This Programme has enabled students at The Beacon School to get involved in a broad range of activities to deepen their understanding of pathways into Higher Education.
Last year, through the 'AimHigher Programme', students at The Beacon were able to apply for summer school programmes in Bio-Medical Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery in order to develop their experience before applying to university. In addition, students in both Year 10 and Year 12 were able to attend lectures at Oxford University while Year 9 students attended the Surrey Skills Fair at The University of Surrey, as well as a variety of university based conferences designed to raise their aspirations and awareness of university based opportunities. In addition to this, The Beacon School's links with Kingston University, developed through the 'AimHigher Programme', enabled the STEM Days for Year 7 and 8 to be a huge success.
This year, The Beacon School has become a ‘Roehampton University Partner’ and we are looking at ways that the University can support both our students and staff by providing extension opportunities to support their studies. For example, we are hoping to provide access to the University Library for History A-Level students. We are also looking at the opportunities for History students to attend lectures delivered by a member of staff at Roehampton. Some of the other opportunities we are investigating include a trip for the EPQ students to the library, the opportunity for Dance students to attend a class, or see a university level performance, and taster days and lectures for a variety of subjects.
We also have good links with the University of Surrey, and are hoping to provide an Information, Advice and Guidance day for all students at The Beacon School, when student ambassadors from the University of Surrey will talk to our students about the range of opportunities that exist after A-Level study.
